What Is PLC Programming?

A programmable logic controller (PLC) is a system that utilizes an electromechanical relay and in some cases a CPU to control and automate machinery in various ways. The main idea behind this technology is for machines to be able to complete tasks automatically, so no human intervention is needed at any point in the process. PLCs employ what we call discrete inputs and outputs, which are simply methods of communication between hardware. Discrete means the outputs (e.g., a valve, conveyor belt on/off) can only be in one of two states: open or closed. This communication is what gives a PLC its ability to control machinery autonomously.

In most robotic integration applications involving robotic welding cells, the PLC is responsible for controlling all movements of the cell on axis and off axis, as well as all position of the welding torch and power to the weld gun. This involves utilizing discrete input/outputs, timers, encoders on servo motors, limit switches, etc. When integrated with a robot controller it is even capable of sending customized signals to the robot arm itself.

How Many Types of PLC Programming Are There?

There are five main types of plc programming.

  1. ladder logic
  2. function block diagram
  3. structured text
  4. instruction list
  5. sequential function chart (sfcm)

What Language Is Used for PLC Programming?

Programming used by PLCs is usually done in a programming language that was specifically designed for and adapted to the needs of programmable logic controllers. Two common languages are IEC 61131-3 and SAE J1939.
